How it is made
Northeast Thailand
Most incense holders are an afterthought — a pressed disc of tin that arrives free with the sticks. This one is poured in solid brass and weighs more than the box it ships in.
The channel is cast, not machined, so its floor keeps the faint grain of the sand it was formed against. Ash collects there and is tipped out. Over a year the brass darkens unevenly, fastest where your fingers land.
River sand fine enough to hold an edge is packed around a pattern, then the flask is split and the pattern withdrawn.
Brass is brought to a little over a thousand degrees and poured in one continuous movement. Hesitation shows in the finished surface.
The mould is destroyed to release a single casting. Each one is made from sand that has never held this shape before.
Only what must be worked is worked. The cast surface keeps the grain of the sand it was formed against.
