How it is made

Västmanland, Sweden

Bookends fail for one reason, which is that they are lighter than the books. These are not. Close to four kilograms the pair, and no two of them are alike.

Because each is poured separately, no two are identical. They are matched by hand into pairs before they ship, and the pair you receive was assembled by someone looking at both.

I The mould

River sand fine enough to hold an edge is packed around a pattern, then the flask is split and the pattern withdrawn.

II The pour

Brass is brought to a little over a thousand degrees and poured in one continuous movement. Hesitation shows in the finished surface.

III The break

The mould is destroyed to release a single casting. Each one is made from sand that has never held this shape before.

IV The hand

Only what must be worked is worked. The cast surface keeps the grain of the sand it was formed against.

This object

Cast individually in solid section, then matched by hand into pairs.

A brass works running on the same river since 1607, founded to end a national dependence on imported metal.
