How it is made
Northeast Thailand
Sold as four because a set of four is what a table needs, and because four individual pours means four visibly different faces.
Cork on the underside is the one concession to practicality in the whole collection. Brass on a waxed table is a mistake you only make once.
River sand fine enough to hold an edge is packed around a pattern, then the flask is split and the pattern withdrawn.
Brass is brought to a little over a thousand degrees and poured in one continuous movement. Hesitation shows in the finished surface.
The mould is destroyed to release a single casting. Each one is made from sand that has never held this shape before.
Only what must be worked is worked. The cast surface keeps the grain of the sand it was formed against.
Cast individually and faced flat, then a cork disc is set into the underside.
Lost-wax brass casting carried by village workshops on the Mun river, where the craft has passed through families for two hundred years.
